Little Red Flowers - A Film Review

Director: Zhang Yuan
Country: China
Language: Mandarin
Subtitle: English
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Art House & International
Duration: 92 minutes

In post-reform China, Fang Qiangqiang is a four-year old toddler who has been put into a well-to-do kindergarten by his parents. However, he finds it very difficult to fit in. He becomes a loner. And when lonely, children can make up all sorts of wierd games and enact them like plays.
Qiang is a little rebel. He tries but cannot conform to the rules laid out by his teachers. But again, children are rewarded little red flowers for good behaviour, for knowing how to dress up, for knowing how to tie their shoelaces, for pooping at the right time. Qiang can get no flower. There is no reward for Individualism. Its all about Conformity to the rules laid out.
Qiang waits till it gets dark and the playground is clear. Then he sneaks out the dormitory and plays with his own shadow. He thinks Ms. Li, their teacher, is a monster who eats little children. He fears he is going to be eaten up next.
The little rebel is ultimately able to conjure a rebellion against Conformity. All his classmates join hands to do something about Ms. Li.
The rebellion is shortlived. The teachers catch Qiang and put him in confinement. He is isolated from all other kids.
When he is allowed to talk to them again, Qiang makes a last attempt to win back his classmates. None respond. So, he escapes through the back door and runs back into his own world, where he can eat "yummy things" with his mama and papa.

The documentary has a fairytale feel to it and is refreshingly innocent. The cast is almost fully composed of toddlers who have done a tearfully wonderful job. The cinematography and sound effects are phenomenal. Takes you back to your own childhood days. The Director is known for his socially and intellectually intriguing movies. Watch and judge. Are you an Individualist or a Conformist?
'Little Red Flowers' is bound to set you thinking...
